How Roman Numerals Work

Roman numerals use additive and subtractive notation. When a smaller value appears before a larger value, it is subtracted (e.g., IV = 4). When a smaller value follows a larger value, it is added (e.g., VI = 6).

Subtractive pairs: IV(4), IX(9), XL(40), XC(90), CD(400), CM(900)
Example: 2024 → MMXXIV
M(1000) + M(1000) + X(10) + X(10) + IV(4) = 2024
