How to Calculate Flooring Material
Area with Waste = Room Area × (1 + Waste%)
Boxes Needed = ⌈Area with Waste ÷ Box Coverage⌉
Always add a waste factor (typically 10%) to account for cuts, mistakes, and future repairs. Round up the number of boxes since you can't buy partial boxes.
Room: 15 ft × 12 ft = 180 sq ft
With 10% waste: 180 × 1.10 = 198 sq ft
Box coverage: 20 sq ft/box
Boxes needed: ⌈198 ÷ 20⌉ = 10 boxes

10%: Standard rectangular rooms, straight install. 15%: Rooms with closets, angles, or hallways. 20%: Diagonal patterns, complex layouts, or first-time installers.

Break the room into rectangles, calculate each section, and add them together. Use a higher waste factor (15–20%) for rooms with many alcoves or angles.
