How to Calculate Gravel Needed
Volume (ft³) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12
Volume (yd³) = Volume (ft³) ÷ 27
Weight (tons) = Volume (yd³) × Density (tons/yd³)
Volume (yd³) = Volume (ft³) ÷ 27
Weight (tons) = Volume (yd³) × Density (tons/yd³)
Depth is entered in inches and converted to feet by dividing by 12. The default density of 1.4 tons/yd³ is typical for most gravel types.
Example:
Driveway: 30 ft × 12 ft × 4 inches deep
Volume = 30 × 12 × (4/12) = 120 ft³
Cubic yards = 120 ÷ 27 = 4.44 yd³
Weight = 4.44 × 1.4 = 6.22 tons

How much does a ton of gravel cover?
At 2 inches deep, one ton of gravel covers roughly 100 sq ft. At 4 inches deep, it covers about 50 sq ft.
Should I order extra gravel?
Yes, add 5–10% to account for compaction, spreading, and irregular ground. Gravel compresses about 10% when driven on or compacted.
