Mulch Calculator Formula
Volume (cubic yards) = (Length × Width × Depth in feet) / 27
Example: 20 ft × 10 ft bed, 3 inches deep.
Volume = (20 × 10 × 0.25) / 27 = 50 / 27 ≈ 1.85 cubic yards
Volume = (20 × 10 × 0.25) / 27 = 50 / 27 ≈ 1.85 cubic yards
Recommended Mulch Depth
| Application | Depth |
|---|---|
| Flower beds | 2–3 inches |
| Tree rings | 3–4 inches |
| Walkways | 3–4 inches |
| Slopes | 4–6 inches |
FAQ
How many bags of mulch do I need?
A standard bag is 2 cubic feet. Divide total cubic feet by 2 to find the number of bags. One cubic yard = 13.5 bags (2 cu ft each).
How often should mulch be replaced?
Most organic mulch should be refreshed annually. Replenish 1–2 inches each spring to maintain proper depth.
