Work Formula
W = F × d × cos(θ)
Work is the dot product of force and displacement. When force is in the direction of motion (θ = 0°), W = F × d.
Example: Push a box with 50 N over 10 m at 0°.
W = 50 × 10 × cos(0°) = 50 × 10 × 1 = 500 J
W = 50 × 10 × cos(0°) = 50 × 10 × 1 = 500 J
When is Work Zero?
- θ = 90° (force perpendicular to motion, e.g., carrying a bag horizontally).
- No displacement (pushing against an immovable wall).
- No force applied.
FAQ
Can work be negative?
Yes. When the force opposes motion (90° < θ ≤ 180°), work is negative. Friction does negative work on a sliding object.
What is the unit of work?
Work is measured in joules (J). 1 joule = 1 Newton × 1 meter.
