How to Calculate a Discount

Discount Amount = Original Price × (Discount% / 100)
Final Price = Original Price − Discount Amount

Or equivalently: Final Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount% / 100)

Example:
Original Price = $120, Discount = 25%
Discount Amount = $120 × 0.25 = $30
Final Price = $120 − $30 = $90

Stacking Discounts

Two successive discounts (e.g., 20% then 10%) are not the same as 30% off. With stacking: $100 → $80 → $72. That's effectively 28% off, not 30%.

FAQ

How do I calculate the original price from a sale price?

Use: Original Price = Final Price / (1 − Discount% / 100). For example, if the sale price is $90 after a 25% discount: $90 / 0.75 = $120.

What does "up to X% off" mean?

It means the maximum discount on select items is X%. Most items may have smaller discounts. Always check the actual price tag.

How do I calculate discount percentage from two prices?

Discount% = ((Original − Sale) / Original) × 100. For example: ($120 − $90) / $120 × 100 = 25%.
