How to Calculate Markup
Markup (%) = ((Selling Price − Cost) / Cost) × 100
Markup represents how much more you charge over your cost, expressed as a percentage of cost.
Example:
Cost = $50, Selling Price = $80
Profit = $80 − $50 = $30
Markup = ($30 / $50) × 100 = 60%
Cost = $50, Selling Price = $80
Profit = $80 − $50 = $30
Markup = ($30 / $50) × 100 = 60%
Finding Selling Price from Markup
Selling Price = Cost × (1 + Markup% / 100)
Example:
Cost = $50, Markup = 60%
Selling Price = $50 × (1 + 0.60) = $50 × 1.60 = $80
Cost = $50, Markup = 60%
Selling Price = $50 × (1 + 0.60) = $50 × 1.60 = $80
Markup vs. Profit Margin
Markup is based on cost; margin is based on selling price. A 100% markup equals a 50% margin. Use our Profit Margin Calculator to compare.
FAQ
What is a typical markup?
Retail goods often use 50–100% markup. Restaurants may mark up food 200–300%. Services and software can have much higher markups due to lower marginal costs.
Can markup exceed 100%?
Yes. A 200% markup means you charge 3× your cost. There's no upper limit on markup percentage.
